Process

When Tiffanie & Fergus celebrated their wedding at Turner Contemporary, they wanted playful stationery that felt more coffee shop aesthetic than traditional wedding. Opting for details that felt meaningful to them - a nod to the iconic Margate architecture, bold creativity and a vibrant, relaxed feel - my first task was to create different design routes to achieve this.

The Architectural route looked at the iconic form of Turner Contemporary, of its recognisable roof cutting through the skyline at an angle, or the gridded system that makes up its facade. The second route - Expressive - was seeing how I can reference the seaside setting in artistic ways. Through thick, textured brushstrokes and a printed quality the architecture took on an abstract and painterly feel. And lastly, the winning route - Illustrative. Creating characters of both the Margate Lido and Turner Contemporary brought everything to life.

The personality I designed through the wedding branding packed a punch. And that was solely through the conversations at the beginning of the process, before any design work had started. It was exploring how Tiffanie & Fergus wanted the day to feel, how they wanted their guests to interact with the design, and how they wanted their personality as a couple to come through. That was my starting point for the creative direction.

These illustrative characters found a life of their own after the wedding. They are now on a tote bag, and inside the thank-you cards and coasters taken home by guests, could there be a better keepsake.
